Gabungan Selamatkan Syria (Save Syria Coalition) condemns the cruel and inhumane acts by the regime of Bashar al-Assad towards the Syrian people.

The fact is the cruelty of the Bashar regime has resulted in the deaths of 8,500 people, a casualty of 39,000 civilians and the imprisonment and torture of 180,000 people. Some of the highlights of their ruthless acts are stealing civilian belongings, assassinating religious scholars, mass murders, raping and violating countless women, banning religious women from wearing the hijab and oppressing the weak such as the elderly and children.

All this tyranny was unleashed only because the people demanded freedom, fairness, peace, democracy and basic human rights.

The Syrian uprising broke out on the 25th of March 2011 when a group of kids who wrote the word ““ال ش عب ي ري د ا س قاط ال نظام ” (People demand the government step down) on a wall were arrested then brutally tortured by the regime’s soldiers. The effect of that injustice is an uprising of the Syrian people demanding peace. Their demands were met with bullets.

Now, after almost 12 months, the protesters are still fighting night and day, defending themselves against cruelty. Bashar al-Assad’s cruel regime has enforced tyranny onto the public by using armoured tanks and heavy artillery to destroy many infrastructures including homes and mosques.

These events have captured the attention of the world so much so that the United Nations (UN) has taken the initiative to condemn the cruelty that Bashar al-Assad’s regime now can no longer hide the injustices.

However, on the 6th of February,2012, both the Russian and Chinese government decided to use their veto power to prevent a Security Council resolution that seeks to condemn the treatment of the Syrian government towards its people. By using their veto power, Russia and China are conspiring with a cruel and heartless regime in Syria. These two UN nations should be just and defend those oppressed by the ruthless Bashar al-Assad regime instead of siding with them.

Additionally, newest UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan who is also the former UN Secretary General has urged an integrated international effort to stop the violence in Syria.

The world shouldn’t let the Syrian people suffer and be oppressed by the cruelty that is Bashar al-Assad. Each person, no matter the race or creed has to stand up against Bashar al-Assad and give support to the struggle of the Syrian people.

On that basis, Malaysia has undertook the effort of forming Gabungan Selamatkan Syria (Save Syria Coalition) to mobilize the people in showing solidarity alongside the Syrian people in confronting the cruelty of Bashar al-Assad regime. This alliance is made of NGO’s from different racial and cultural backgrounds all uniting to demand freedom and peace for Syria. Indeed, staying silent against cruelty inflicted on others is a form of injustice.

The Coalition hereby demands:

Bashar al-Assad to cease all forms of cruelty and murder on the Syrian people immediately.
Bashar al-Assad to step down immediately.
The Malaysian Government to stand their ground in condemning the cruel acts by Bashar al-Assad and to bring back the Malaysian Ambassador from Syria.
It is hereby announced that a peaceful rally will be held on Friday, 16th of March 2012 at 2,45 pm at the Syrian Embassy, Jalan U-thant, Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. A memorandum by the Malaysian people will be handed over to the Syrian Embassy, represented by the Gabungan Selamatkan Syria (Save Syria Coalition).

All Malaysian citizens, disregarding the cultural and racial background are encouraged to be present at the peaceful rally. For the Muslims, they can perform their Jumaah prayers at the Tabung Haji Mosque or Asy-Syakirin Mosque at KLCC and can join the gathering at the Syrian Embassy right after their prayers.
